Sony A7 IV Firmware 6.01: What's New + How to Install It Right

Sony A7 IV firmware 6.01 is out — and this one actually fixes the last update.

Version 6.00 was pulled in December after causing reboot loops and power save issues. The new 6.01 release patches those problems and adds genuinely useful shooting and video tools.

I made a full walkthrough covering every new feature and the cleanest way to install it without bricking your day:

What You Get in 6.01

Autofocus Upgrades:

  • Custom Focus Zones — draw your own AF areas, save 3 presets

  • Spot XL — larger focus target, works best with AF-C

  • Tracking variants for all focus area types

Video Features:

  • Clip flagging — mark OK/NG/KEEP during or after recording

  • Persistent audio meters — finally visible while recording

  • Dual card capacity display for relay recording

Display & Workflow:

  • Vertical display layout — UI adapts when you flip the camera

  • Golden Ratio grid overlay

  • Larger menu text option

Pro/Network:

  • FTP improvements

  • Image Authenticity Solution support

  • WPA/WEP removal (security cleanup)

Quick Install Cheat Sheet

  1. Check your version: Menu → Setup → Setup Option → Version

  2. Update path:

    • Firmware 1.01 or earlier → Install 1.05 FIRST, then 6.01

    • Firmware 1.05+ → Go straight to 6.01

  3. Method:

    • Memory card works for all versions

    • Creators' App only works from firmware 2.0+

The video above covers step-by-step installation plus demos of every new feature.

If you're still on an older firmware, pay close attention to the version check — going straight to 6.01 from 1.01 or earlier can cause issues.
